Fear of First Flare-up

Hello Everyone - I have been diagnosed with COPD about two years ago. Suddenly I keep reading about the dreadful first excerbation or flare-up, it is beginning to scare me a lot - is it true that no matter what you are going to experience a very frightening first flare up episode and if so how do you prepare for it?

  1. Hi resurrected, and thanks for your post. You've posed an excellent question! As you may be aware, COPD affects everyone differently. Having said that, I will also add that each person's very first exacerbation can vary considerably as well. For some, it can be a significant change in one's typical day-to-day condition, while for others, it may not be quite as severe.
We do have an article published right here on COPD.net, authored by our own , which focuses on this very topic. For your convenience, here is a link to that material: https://copd.net/living/first-exacerbation.
I do hope you find it to be helpful information.
Please don't be frightened - you are always welcome here in our online community. If there is anything we can assist you with. or discuss further, please let me or any other moderator / team member know.
    Wishing you well,
