I dwell on relaxing and taking in slow deep breathes. It’s always scary.

Having a flare up and this is day 6. Hopefully been through the worst now. My advice is to do exactly what you need to do to
1 get thru it.
2 get better
Flare ups are a reality for me, I accept it knocks me back and I prepare for next time.
Best wishes

I never know if I'm suffering a flare up or simply being effected by different weather conditions.

It may be worth having a longer discussion where you work together to decide the circumstances where you'd take your as needed medication, how often, and what to do if you're still struggling. In the asthma community, most people have an "asthma action plan" that explains what they should do, step by step, if they start experiencing symptoms. That way they don't have to panic or waste time in a serious moment -- they can just follow the plan. Something like this may be useful for you, but I'm not an expert, so feel free to disregard if it doesn't make sense in your situation.
