Hi . If you get a referral from your doctor, chances are good that insurance will cover palliative care. You don't have to go with that particular provider though if you're not happy with them or your insurance doesn't cover them. Here is a tool for finding palliative care in your area that might help: https://getpalliativecare.org/provider-directory/.
I think I would start by asking about their approach and the level of expertise (credentials, etc.), and then asking what care would provide you with and how might that care differ from seeing your pulmonologist regularly. It other words, how would this type of care benefit you, specifically? Will they help you navigate things like shortness of breath, anxiety, nutrition, oxygen use (if you have it?)? Do they communicate regularly with others on your medical team? This is a big change, so don’t be shy about asking questions. Maybe ask those closest to you if they will help you develop a list.
Palliative care can be lifechanging for some people. It can reduce hospital trips and doctor visits, making life easier. I hope that helps and that others chime in with their experiences. – Lori (Team Member)
