Spireva

Hi there . I am taking 6 puffs of symbicort daily . My doctor wants to add Spireva due to low lung function but I’m concerned about side effects since I’m already on a higher than usual dose of symbicort . He hopes I can back it down to 4 puffs symbicort plus Spireva but if i can’t do that I am concerned about adding the Spireva could be too much medication . Is anybody out there on 6 puffs of symbicort plus Spireva ? Any side effects ? Thank you kindly .

  1. ,
No matter what medication one takes, there is always a chance of side effects. Even with over the counter medications. Your medical team always weighs the possible side effects against the benefits. If they determine the benefits outweigh the side effects, then you get extra meds. The only way to know for sure is to use the extra medication and find out. Monitor the effects carefully. If there is any side effect that makes you uncomfortable, then stop the med immediately and contact your medical team. I had my medical team give me a sample of Trelegy when Symbicort became no longer available through my local Prescription Assistance Program. Within two days, I had very bad thrush despite mouth rinsing, gargling, and brushing my teeth after using. I immediately stopped using it and contacted my medical team. I am now on Bevespi and it works well for me. So please follow your medical team's plan and see what happens. Contact them if any result is not satisfactory. Take care and God Bless!

    1. Yes thank you for the suggestions . However the side effects of Spireva include heart side effects of 1 in 1000.
My friend started Spireva and went twice to emergency with a racing heart . I live in the country and am not close to a hospital as he is so it is a frightening prospect for me . I also have high blood pressure which is controlled but again Spireva could cause a dangerous spike . These are not minor side effects -hence my worry .
I wondered if anybody out there is actually on this regimen of meds ?

      1. Hi . Have you talked with your doctor about taking Spireva with high blood pressure? I wonder whether you could try a dose at the doctor's office and stay in the waiting room until you and the doctor are both certain you are in the clear. - Lori (Team Member)

I will say once again, you need to contact your medical team ASAP and let them know what is happening. It sounds like it is not working for you. Please let the forum know how it all works out. Take care and God Bless!

      1. It's hard to answer questions like these because each person is different ... some will have issues with side effects, others won't, and unfortunately the only foolproof way to know is to try.

That said -- please know that this is your decision and that you have the right to do what you feel is best! You are the expert in your own body, and if you are really concerned about having severe reactions, then you can tell your doctor you don't want to do it, and that's that. They may still try to convince you, but a good doctor will see themselves as making decisions *with* you, as a team, not dictate to you. Don't be afraid to ask about other medication options or to request a second opinion from a different doctor.
