Problems caused by coughing

This is embarrassing but I wonder if anyone else has this problem. I have always had urinary stress incontinence, but now when I cough I also have"other" incontinence.mostly a little but sometimes more.
It's hard enough taking a shower even once a day but wet wipes aren't enough like they were for urine.Does anyone else have this problem, I feel alone in this.

  1. Hi . Please know you are far from alone. Bowel incontinence is somewhat common for people with COPD. Here is an article from one of our health leaders who experiences it and you will find similar stories the comments: https://copd.net/living/mishaps. Have you tried Dude Wipes? From what I understand, they are a bit stronger than regular wipes. I hope this helps. Know we are here whenever you need us. - Lori (Team Member)

  2. Honestly, I use as many wet wipes as I need to feel clean ... sometimes that's 2 or 3. Don't be afraid to do what you need to do.

Showering is one of the biggest obstacles for our community. Do you feel like you have a good set up for when you do shower? Some of the best things you can do are to use a shower chair and a detachable showerhead. These are inexpensive and you may be able to get them covered by insurance if you talk with your doctor. If you can save up or splurge, maybe you could even buy a bidet for your toilet. Prices vary a lot for this but you can find some attachments on Amazon for about $25.

Another tip we hear a lot is using a terrycloth robe to dry off after your shower. I have never done this, but many people here swear by it.

I hope this helps. Learning how to adapt can be really challenging, but you're not alone. We're here for you! -Melissa, team member
