Swallowing problems

Does anyone else have problems swallowing? I guess that after so many years I am far from critical, taking tablets, inhalers and liquids daily. In the throat three "tubes" meet closely; the stomach tube, a tube from the nose and the tube to the lungs. On occasion I cough out phlegm from the lung tubes and bring up a pill which I took the previous night. I have also "snorted" inwards from my nose and spat out the muck from there - including on occasion pills I had taken. The pills spat out were recognisable from colour or "different" shape. In all cases I thought that the medicine had successfully gone to the stomach. My throat close to the tonsil area has narrowed and larger pills simply cannot get down. On two occasions antibiotic capsules ( for non COPD purposes) got stuck in the throat, broke open and it felt like a fire which water would not quench. Any suggestions because I got nothing from the doctor?

  1. Hi. Wow! I am stunned that your doctor had nothing to say or recommend for you. There are many people, with COPD and without COPD, who have trouble swallowing or experience GERD (https://copd.net/clinical/gerd-gastroesophageal-reflux-disease). In fact, GERD has actually been linked with COPD, as you can see by that link. Would you consider talking about this with a second doctor? John. community moderator

    1. Hi! How is your week going? Did you have a chance to see John's article? I definitely agree with him, and think that a visit to a gastro specialist could be useful. Not sure where you are, but either your GP or your pulmonologist can refer you to a gastro doctor. And if they refuse to do so, it may be time to seek a second opinion. You deserve to be taken seriously. Don't be afraid to push them for what you need. -Melissa, team member

      1. John & Melissa. Thank you both for your answers. I had never thought about it but GERD is a definite possibility (lunch today was baked beans in tomato sauce and 15 minutes later I had a coughing fit and a bean came up!) Ties in with pills returning up to 12 hours later in the past. I suspect that one can have "attacks" - have it today and be fine for months so I am not going to worry too much. Speak to a doctor? the waiting list is 4 weeks and may increase. A & E when you are broken or almost dead! As for consultants those are booked by the doctor. I have had COPD well over a third of a century and still get about very well (over 12000 paces today by 1300 hours!)
OK I'm lucky and work around problems (like that American drink which is controlling my COPD attacks - the doctors here laugh at it but if it seems to work then.....? Might well be psychosomatic (? correct word) but IF it works then...... .that seems to be like some uses of hypnosis which I have used for dismissing pain).

As a kid I was brought up and over 60 years ago was trained for when Moscow would drop an H bomb on London. That included every form of search and rescue, plus first aid , water rescue, fire fighting etc etc. all without help during a notional 30 days after the attack. (I could deliver a baby before I learned how they were made!} With all that one got hardened and controlled against pain. exhaustion etc. That background showed up years later in a multiple car crash when I was holding the fort until help arrived - hours later it was found that I had broken 4 ribs, had pneumothorax and +/ - 40 stitches and didn't feel anything except for slippery hands. There was a death then and I have seen too many when I worked on motor racing tracks..
Yes; it is about attitude - COPD IS nasty but there is much to write about HOW it is dealt with. Certainly not "woe is me for I am undone"

        1. Ah, the NHS. Say no more. My uncle is from London and actually resorted to having needed procedures in the US because of the abysmal wait times. It's not perfect here either, so it's a trade off.

12000 steps! That's a ton of walking! Where do you go? I know your health is better for it. Hopefully it's not awfully hot where you are. Philadelphia has been boiling!

I'm just sorry your digestive system isn't cooperating. We've had people share that smaller meals and smaller bites of food can help. Just be as careful as you can until you can get this sorted out. Be well! -Melissa, team member
