Copd & progression

Will COPD progress a lot if i never smoke again? I havent been diagnosed yet. No noticeable symptoms but obviously my smoking history is not good & i know you can have it with no symptoms. 43F, quit smoking 4+ mo ago. The last 10 yrs i smoked an average of 10/day. Before that 20/day for 15 yrs. Im a runner but slow. 11 min mile. i run abt 3 miles a day up to 6 mi.

  1. Hi. Thank you for your post here. And it's also possible that you do not have COPD, as not everyone who smokes will be diagnosed with COPD. I believe studies show that 20-30% of people who smoke develop it. So, that gives you a 70-80% chance you do not have it. That said, Congratulations on quitting smoking. Here is a list of benefits of quitting (https://copd.net/living/rewards-quitting-smoking-nutshell). To add to this, whether you have COPD or not, quitting can prolong your life, as you can see here (https://copd.net/living/why-quitting-smoking-can-prolong-life. And yes, if you do have COPD, quitting can slow the progression, as you can see here (https://copd.net/living/slowing-progression). What do you think? 2. That's a concern i have. Stage 3 along with a stemi last year. 4 Stents. Also positive with the gene. Yes ex smoker. Line of work constantly with trucks and welding for 40 plus years. Like the specialist stated those trucks with the exhaust and welding gases are worse than smoking 5 packs a day. Staying positive.

      1. I got a handful of stents myself, and I have had them since I was 30. I have been on a chronic illness journey as well and it certainly is a pain in the butt and frustrating. Staying positive is what we are supposed to do, or so they tell us, but it is difficult at times. It is good to know that there are others going through the same thing, though, so remember - you are not alone either! Let us know if there's anything we can do to help. Keep on keepin' on, DPM
