COPD and Nose Issues

Do you deal with a stuffy, runny, or dry nose? What tips and tricks do you have for managing nose issues with your COPD?

  1. I often have "dry nose" syndrome. It got so bad several years ago that I would get nose bleeds bad enough to send me to the ER. My doctor told me to use a Q-tip and Vaseline. I use it every day and haven't had a problem with bleeding since.

    1. It is not safe to use Vaseline or anything containing petroleum jelly with oxygen therapy. Please consider using an alternative for your safety. <3

Here's a good list that covers what is and isn't safe with oxygen:

    2. I use KY Jelly. Better than Ayr.

  2. I pray that the Veteran Medical Centers Dentistry knows what this website shows

    1. @I need all my upper roots of my teeth removed. I don't know how this could be done while I'm on oxygen with out pain and anxiety? Suggestions? THANKS

    2. I can relate. Because of dry mouth I had to have all of my teeth removed. I am on night oxygen and was on a c-pap for years. They will likely sedate you, unless there are reasons why they can't. They will give you pain medication. If anxiety is a concern, do discuss this with your doctor or dentist. Do you use a nasal cannula with your oxygen? Wearing a mask is doable too. Do discuss with your doctor or dentist too. Even their techs might be able to advise you on these things. I hope that you find some of this helpful. Know that we are always here for you. Janet (COPD Team)

  3. I use Flonase and Arm and Hammer saline spray.

    1. I use a product that pulmonologist mentioned called AYR. It's an ointment I think it's aloe. You get it OTC so ask someone to help you find it in drugstore
