Beta blockers

I have read that with copd taking beta blockers can be a double edged sword. Taking beta blockers slow down heart rate so lungs don't get a good amount of oxygen rich blood cells. Not taking beta blockers can make heart work too hard to keep up with activities. How to know which if the better of two evils?

  1. Hi . Beta blockers are only prescribed if your heart is working to hard to push blood through your body, making your blood pressure high. High blood pressure is hard on your entire cardiovascular system, including your lungs. Beta blockers work by preventing blood vessels from constricting, which allows blood to flow more smoothly. So you are actually getting the same amount of oxygen-rich blood in your lungs, but with less effort. It's easier on your heart. Here is an article that explains it better than I can: https://copd.net/clinical/heart-medicines. I hope this helps. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)
