Earning Extra Income
The last thing you may want in the flurry of the COPD mix is extra responsibility while having to make an income, yet money often makes the world go round. I have found ways to stretch my time and increase my income and wanted to share them incase they could be of help to you.
Income solutions for COPD patients and caregivers
I was working full time out of the home, caring for residents in an assisted living facility for years, until I had to leave my job and care for my mom full time in our home. I was forced to stop my income but had to get creative as I saw my savings disappear and the level of care my mom needed increased. We did not have long term care insurance in place nor a pool of savings set up for my mom’s care.
Below are some options that may help stretch your dollar or keep income coming in as you navigate COPD.
Clinical trials
Some reputable medical research sites offer the chance for both patients and caregivers to participate in clinical trials and surveys. This helps further medical research for conditions including COPD and others, as well as offers some income for participants in the trials if they qualify.
As always, it is important to check with your primary care team first. It is important to not interfere with your current medical conditions.
Medical surveys
Medical surveys are less invasive ways to provide your input on medical conditions and care that may provide some income if you are selected to participate. They are less time intrusive and most can be done in the privacy and comfort of your home.
Working remote
Remote work is also an option for those who can work from home. I was able to work from home for 3 solid years and it allowed me to have access to my mom to care for her and provide her comfort that I was within earshot if she needed me.
Many employers do ask if you have any disabilities and COPD does qualify as a disability. Many employers advertise roles as Remote or Hybrid, and that can be discussed in the hiring process.
While you are still able to work, transitioning your current role to hybrid or fully remote may be an option for you and is worth discussing with HR.

You may find yourself, like me, trying to find the support and words of wisdom out there in the world of COPD books or online support. And you may find that there are gaps in information or support.
The good part about your COPD journey is that it is both unique and something that is shared by millions of people worldwide. Taking the time to write out your experience can be something you can share with others.
Sharing your experiences can provide healing and hope to not just others but to yourself. By starting a social media page, you can develop a following and can earn income in countless ways.
Creating useful medical symptom charts and logs, for example, or sharing your product recommendations in an online shop on Amazon. You have the opportunity to help other patients and earn money at the same time!
