Puffy feet edema

Hello ,I'm 72 yr old male with overlap Asthmer copd I was wondering if it is common to get puffier feet when the weather has been wet ,all my Dr could say was elevate feet ,I don't want to race into emergency at hospital every time they get puffy definitely seem worse when wet weather.thank you.

  1. I find that I get puffy feet at times as well, and I have little doubt that it is about 'everything in life' related. And it is not that I look down and see the Stay Puffed Marshmallow Man attached to my ankles, I can FEEL they are swollen. I put my feet up, it helps, increase my water intake, it helps, but it never really seems to go away. What I have found out through experimentation, and maybe the folks here can add some info to it, is laxatives if you are on narcotics of any sort or steroids. They seem to do strange things to water retention and where it gets stored.
You are not alone by any means, and I hope that I can shed a little light on an irritating issue.

    1. You made me laugh with the image of the marshmallow man wrapped around your ankles. Swelling is uncomfortable, obviously, but I appreciate that you can look at it with a sense of humor. 😀 Glad you're here, South Paw. -Melissa, team member

    2. hi I too suffer from puffy feet ,unfortunately usually when I elevate feet it brings on a coughing attack, it must overload my lungs when I'm trying to clear chest coughing I nearly get anxiety attack ,it's like catch 22 feet look a bit normal after elevating but then nearly choke coughing , thanks any replies appreciated.

  2. Hi . Most often, puffy ankles or feet are caused by a comorbidity that commonly develops in people with COPD. Here is an article that explains it better than I can and offers some tips for bringing swelling down: https://copd.net/answers/expert-answers-relief-for-swollen-ankles. I hope this helps. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

      1. Hi . I can see why the weight loss would make you nervous, but, as your doctor said, weight loss with COPD is common and often due to the extra energy it takes to breathe. Here is an article about COPD and weight loss from our editorial team that might interest you: https://copd.net/symptoms/weight-loss. Always feel free to reach out with questions. 2. I am not sure that anyone can try to put things into a perspective that they would share with you. Everyone's journey down this river of COPD is different, challenges are not all the same, and the intensity differs. But, it IS the same river, just different parts of it. I can only comment on the rapids I encountered, and you may have also ridden them out. Or, you may be on a different set I have yet to encounter.
The bottom line is, we are here. We all share the same waterway, the same problems, but the solutions are not always common. Although I can sympathize, I can not totally understand what you endure at any particular time.
But I am here, listening and trying to help. We all are, you as well. By being here and posting what you experience, you share knowledge that those of us who have not reached the point in the river you are at. With luck, someone else who has shared what you encounter can offer more for relief or confidence. What I can offer is prayer and hope. I should be far worse for wear than I show. And for that, I am grateful. Same for you. It can ALWAYS be a lot worse. You make the choices sometimes on just how bad it can be. Never give up, never give in. Just keep swimming........
