Oxygen Levels

Hi
Looking for advice, my Dad has been a smoker for 40+ years and stopped after a 2nd heart attack and COPD diagnosis in May 2025. He was at a physio and heart function clinic yesterday but his oygen levels even whilst on a bike where high. They stayed at 97%-98% the lowest dip was 93% and that was with talking and cycling at the same time. This was also after forgetting his Fostair inhaler in the morning (exercise was 12pm).

I was advised his oxygen should never be above 93% and that is what we have been looking for when he is ill with a cold etc. Would this mean that I should be worried if he does get to 93%?

  1. ,
I do not understand this post. I am not a doctor or a health care provider, but I have never heard of not wanting your oxygen level to be above 93%. That to me makes no sense. My pulmonologist gets concerned if my oxygen level gets into the lower 90% category. I recently had a oxygen level study done to see if my oxygen level dropped to 87% or lower for 5 minutes or more at any time. If so, I would have to be on oxygen. My level stayed at 95% and higher throughout the study. So it makes no sense that a lower level of oxygen is better than a higher one. Am I missing something? Is this a misunderstanding? Could you explain the reasoning behind this better? I ask because this makes absolutely no sense to me.

  2. Hi . Are you worried that about what to do if it gets below 93 percent? We're not medical experts, but I would probably play it safe by having him stop exercising and contact his doctor. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)
