Immediate SOB Incidents

Has anyone experienced sudden and rapid onset of dropping Spirometry numbers and rapidly rising heart rate? In my case 94 to 68% Spirometry and heart rate 94 to 138. This has happened on several occasions. Sitting on sofa all is fine then get up and walk 8 feet to my kitchen and BAM! Out of nowhere. This lasted around 30 minutes. Extreme SOB including loss of bladder function. (Uncontrollable urine release) Horrible experience trying to regain breathing.

  1. Yes especially after taking off the O2 in the morning right when getting out of bed.
Right into the bathroom. Yes. Very hard to control the bladder. Yes i can feel BP increasing.

    1. Hi. Sorry this is happening to you, it's got to be a scary experience! As COPD symptoms get worse, it can be more difficult to do usual tasks, and a short walk can cause severe shortness of breath. Losing bladder control, while difficult to deal with, is from your body using all of its resources to conserve energy and oxygen.

Are you on supplemental oxygen? If you're not, it might help lessen the severity of those episodes. Regardless, the oxygen levels you're experiencing are very low. I would encourage you to talk to your doctor about this as soon as possible so that you can get checked out and avoid an emergency situation. Please keep us posted, okay? You're not alone. -Melissa, team member

      1. Hello Melissa Yes I am on oxygen most days 24/7, 8-10 ltr. Some days I can go entirely without any oxygen and get by, no clue how nor why, but most times at least 4 ltrs at rest and 8 with minimal activities.
        Makes no sense whatsoever.
I've had Emphysema now 8 years. Didn't even know I had it and for first 3 years there were no restrictions, full speed ahead. And of course like a FOOL I continued to smoke.
Maybe things would have been different? Made my own bed so here on out I get to lay in it unfortunately.😥
No one to blame but yours truly.
I joined palliative care about a year ago. They have been very helpful in prescribing Morphine which tricks the mind into not realizing you are slowly suffocating. Hate this!!!

        1. Not sure if this can help, but I had physical therapy from 2 sources. One was scheduled with my palmary team, another through the VA.
In both of these experiences, I was put on monitors and when my O2 began to drop. my heart rate would begin to climb. I grew concerned as I watched this in real time, but both teams smiled reassuringly and told me that it is a body defense mechanism. As O2 drops, the heart pumps harder to supply what is needed for the body, like a 'what we lack in quality, we make up for in quantity' thing. As my O2 rose, my heart rate dropped in relationship to it. It is still doing this as I over do things, which I KNOW none of us really do, right? We just test the boundaries. All the time.
Again, not sure it is on track, but any info that is good info is, well, good info. Best wishes.

          1. Greetings
