Shortness of breath

How to manage

  1. Welcome to the community, . I am glad you found us. Shortness of breath can be scary and that fear can make people anxious, worsening the shortness of breath. So, often, the best approach is something that forces your body to calm down. Here is an article about a method called pursed lip breathing: https://copd.net/guest-expert/pursed-lips-are-not-just-for-kissing. Many people have had lots of success with it, I hope it helps you and that you get input from others in the community. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. I use pursed lip most of the time and breathe in hold and release double the time like 5-5-10

  2. Hi - Managing shortness of breath sometime depends on the reason for it. As Lori mentioned, pursed lip breathing is very helpful since it does a few things - it forces you to breath slower, it increases the time it takes to exhale, and it has a calming effect. A COPD friendly diet can also help manage shortness of breath, so you may want to consider some ways to alter what you eat. Take a look at this article: https://copd.net/living/diet-with-exercise
Hopefully that gives you a few places to start. Kind Regards, Lyn (moderator COPD.net)
