Why does wine cause headaches?

My only real pain is an occasional top-of-the-head headache. It happens sometimes when I have on my portable oxygen tank for an extended period, have been exerting for several hours or had a glass of wine. I am assuming the headache is from low oxygen, but why does the wine cause this?

  1. Hi Buckybuck,

There are a few reasons wine can cause headaches. Wine, especially reds, contain tannins that can affect some people and cause headaches. Another is the sugar that wines contain. Lastly, some people are prone to an allergic reaction to wines that cause histomines to be released - causing a headache.

You're also right that low oxygen can cause headaches as well. So it's something to be careful of.

    1. I read all of your posts and thank you al for them. I believe my headache are from low oxygen. I do not wake up with them. I get them when I drink wine, usually one glass, any variety, and if I have been exerting more than I should so that I become quite short of breath. One aspirin does the trick, however. I do not drink caffeine. I am just wondering why drinking wine would cause lack of oxygen.

      1. I wish I knew. But if I have a glass of wine, I get a migraine. So I just stay away

        1. I hear you. Sometimes it's just not worth it. Some people are sensitive to the sulfites in wine. Have you had migraines for a long time?
