Wake up

Couldn't think of a better topic name but....not sure if this is normal, abnormal or just a figment of my imagination. When I first wake up, I feel fine. No thoughts of COPD, no heaviness or feeling that need to cough. But, by the time I finish my coffee, those feelings, thoughts and symptoms have returned and it's back to my usual existence. Is this normal or do I need to seek (humor attempt) psychological help?

  1. ,
I know exactly what you mean. And no, you do not need psychological help. I get up and go through a wake up period. It is usually an hour before I start to cough and clear out my lungs in the morning. I think it is from sleeping and not being active calms everything down and your breathing is not hard or forced. But once you are up and moving (making coffee, making breakfast, making up the bed, etc.)your breathing becomes more necessary and harder at times depending on what you are doing. Hence the reason to take things slow and not over due it. It does take time to get moving in the morning. So you are not alone in that respect. Take care and God Bless!

    1. When I first wake up, I’m fine. After I take my meds, get dressed and start moving around. I start getting a bit more short of breath. Then as I’m having my coffee, I have cough and hack for about an hour and get all the crap up that’s been building up overnight. And I’m basically good for the day.

  2. Thanks for the insight. I'll cancel my appointment to the shrink...lol

    1. Sum times I will wakeup and fell just fine but that feeling only last till I set up an think about going to bathroom. My bathroom is only a few feet from me 10 steps or so. I feell like I have to plan it out just to make it there an back. More than once I have had to set down at the foot of my bed and have my nebulizer brought to me for fear I would pass out if I went another step. But the few minutes that I feel normal when I wake up is a great feeling till it ant. Thanks again to all

      1. I have heard some people start their day by doing a nebulizer treatment in bed, taking their meds, doing breathing exercises, etc. This may require you to wake up a bit earlier, but it could help make things easier when you get out of bed. Are you on oxygen? If you are having trouble walking to the bathroom, it might be worth talking to your doctor about what else might be possible to help you. -Melissa, team member

    2. I find that my mornings SEEM better when I first awaken, but I doubt that to have any actual merit. Nighttime, for me, is a struggle, and as I have combed through the info here, I see that I am far from alone with this issue. Sleep is difficult, breathing ragged, and medications seem to offer little respite. I sleep as morning arrives and feel 'better' as I get up. But, I think it is more a comparison to the prior event than actually being in a better physical capacity. As night again approaches, the pattern repeats itself.
I hope this comparison helps in some small way, and I hope that you find relief. I know it is difficult in a world where the medical wonders just keep coming, because they do not seem to come fast enough for our particular ailment.
Keep yer stick on the ice, best wishes.
