Visiting bats

Hi, I'm going to Chester Zoo in March and wish to take part in the fruit bat experience which means I will be up close and personal with the little creatures. Is this safe to do being as I have severe COP)D.
Many thanks in advance

  1. ratlady,
This is an interesting question. I am not a doctor, so anything I post is just my opinion. First off, I would think the bats are all clean, disease free, and safe for humans to be around or the zoo would not be able to do it. I would think as long as you wash thoroughly afterwards, I would thing you would ok to do it. Possibly wear a mask also for safety. I don't know what protocols the zoo has for visitors' safety, but I am sure there are some. I would think it would not be any more dangerous to your health then handling a turtle or a snake. As long as you wash up after handling them. I would check with the zoo and see what their protocols are for the experience and if your COPD condition would be bad for your health. I would also DEFINITELY contact your doctor and medical team to see what they advise. The bottom line is we only live once and if this is something you really want to do, then do it. There are many things we want to do and we have to weigh the advantages and disadvantages to each one due to our COPD condition. I have done a few things I probably shouldn't have to see my grandkids and do things with them. Was having a small flareup worth it? To me it was. I am interested to hear what decision you made. Take care and God Bless!

    1. What a neat opportunity! I think that the zoo staff will have these answers readily for you -- they would want to ensure all their guests are protected from any illness or injury during the visit, so I'm willing to bet they are well-prepared. At least I hope so!

Please keep us posted on how it all goes! Take some pictures for memories, too. -Melissa, copd team
