Update to My Wife's September Car Accident

Just wanted to update my wife's recovery from her car accident in September. Her shoulder and knee have pretty much recovered and are feeling better. But her neck has not. She is having surgery this Friday to have two more vertebrae fused. She had two fused in 1999 after an accident where she was hit from behind and the whiplash caused a ruptured disc in her neck. Now it is the two vertebrae above that. The procedure has changed quite a bit. It is only an hour and a half procedure as opposed to 4 hours in 1999. Cadaver bone instead of her own hip bone is now used. It is also an outpatient procedure. Recovery is abut 2 weeks for most of it and 3 months for total recovery. The lawyers office is providing transportation to San Antonio for the procedure and our daughter is picking us up. We have to be up at 5 AM to make it the hospital by 7:30 AM. Going to be a long day for both of us. I am already preparing for taking all my meds, food, water, acapella, and reading material. Then I am also mentally preparing to be caretaker for several weeks. Thank heaven our daughter lives right up the street from us should we need any more help. I will update after the procedure and how we are doing. Take care everyone and God Bless! Hope you all have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

  1. Thanks for the update. I’m praying all goes well and she has a speedy recovery. Please remember to take care of yourself. Seems like you’ve planned for this and are preparing mentally is so important as I’ve learned too when your regular schedule is thrown off or at least somewhat. Take care & hope to hear a great update as she heals. God bless you & family. Merry Christmas.

    1. Yes, for sure keep us updated! It sounds like you have everything well in hand, though! I know some of what you are going through as I had my own chronic illness journey result in surgery last year when I had to wear an external bone lengthening device for six months to correct a severely deformed foot. Now, almost a year later, I can't even imagine what it was like before when I walked on the side of my foot. The time will go fast and before you all know it, the result will be the new normal. Wishing you the best and, again, let us know if there's anything else we can do! Have a wonderful holiday season as well! Keep on keepin' on, DPM

      1. Glad to hear of the progress the Mrs. is having, hoping for a speedy recovery from surgery. It appears that you have this under control for your part, please make sure you get your rest and while being the care giver, it's important for both of you. Best wishes for all to go extremely well! Will look forward to hearing the out come of all this. Hugs to you both

Thank you all for your kind words, thoughts and prayers. There is another curveball thrown in. I caught an upper respiratory infection last week and couldn't shake it. I contacted my medical team through their internet portal yesterday and had two prescriptions within two hours. I am on 500mg of Levofloxacin daily for a week and of course Prednisone 20mg for 5 days. I was coughing up brown mucus with some blood mixed in. That is gone after one day of meds. I didn't want to end up with pneumonia again. I will post tomorrow after we get back from the surgery. Take care all and God Bless!
