Trying to figure out what is making me worse

Has anybody had or know of someone that had experienced a flare up from the use of Mucinex daily?

  1. It doesn't work that way. Mucinex does NOT cause flare-ups. The problem is the current air quality, which we are discussing right now. I've taken it for three years daily and probably wouldn't be here without it. We have Sahara dust, and fire smoke from Canada and Mexico, all coming at us at once, cooking in triple digit temperatures. Plus insane weather in many areas.
From this and your other (flare-up) post, I would guess you may be struggling to overcome pneumonia. I have a similar history, and I had pneumonia five times last year. We are all having breathing issues just like you from the smoke and dust and crap in the air. It's going to be a long difficult summer. Take extra care.

    1. thank you!

    2. Hi again. How are you doing this week? Were you able to be discharged, or at the very least are you still making positive progress? Take good care of yourself and try not to rush the recovery. We are here if you want to talk! -Melissa, copd.net team

  2. Hi and thanks for your post and question - it's a good one! Although what our good member, , has said is basically true (Mucinex does not typically cause any kind of 'flare-up' or exacerbation, the way we think of them), there are folks who may have an allergic reaction to the medication. Depending on the nature and extent of the allergic response, additional intervention may be necessary.
Cautionary warnings for allergic reactions to any medications are usually posted on the packaging material.
I do hope this brief reply helps to address your concern.
    Wishing you well,

    1. Dang, I should have thought of allergic reactions - though I've never had that issue, but I am not one to talk as I am deathly allergic to all antihistamines. Duh! Still, I've not heard of anyone having an allergy to Guaifenesin. But it wouldn't surprise me. However, I can't imagine how I would make it without the stuff.

    2. I hear you, kloker - no harm, no foul!! I only wanted to make certain everyone kept in mind that, generally speaking, allergic reactions to many medications are few and far between. However, that doesn't mean that for those who do have an allergy - it's no less serious. You would know, too, since you've shared your concern about all antihistamines!!
So many folks I take care of really find that Mucinex (and the generics), work so well for them - just like you!!
      Have a good night, kloker!

  3. Sorry you are having another flare, but you are in the right place, hospital, to get the help you need. Just wondering though, could taking Mucinex daily cause someone to dehydrate, causing breathing issues? Then with the heat you have all been getting there in Phx, AZ, as stated air quality could be an issues too! I wish you the very best with the Bronchoscopy and they docs are able to get you back up on your feet again!

    1. ,
I hear ya on the poor breathing days here in Central Texas. Been a real miserable stretch of intense heat. And looks to continue for at least the next 2 weeks. I also have been using maximum number of breathing treatments daily. Still have to take out the trash, get the mail, etc. It is like walking into a wall. Instant hard to breathe. I try to do as much as possible as early in the morning as I can. But you are 100% correct kloker, going to be a long, difficult summer, Hang in there my friend. Take care and God Bless!

    2. Hi again, Doris, and thanks for joining in the conversation here. Generally speaking, Mucinex markets itself as being alcohol-free. Having said that, it's always a good idea to check the components of each medication one is taking. We, as patients, have a responsibility to ourselves to be astute and aware of the active ingredients in the medications we use!
Some medications do cause dryness and that will affect each patient differently. That is yet another reason to keep keenly aware of the contents of our medications. For those who may need assistance, the local pharmacist is always a good resource.
      Wishing you well,

  4. Hi there, Well this is weird, came on site and read about flare ups, at the moment I am slowly getting better but dyed my hair on Saturday and had a bad reaction to it, so have had two swollen eyes forehead and eyes and sore very sore scalp,I have been given stuff to use on my head, steroids. Lucky I didn’t have to go into doctors, sent photos, as it was to painful to move my head, and had swollen neck on right hand side.Getting slowly better now. I was worried at one point because my right eye was becoming a bit too swollen, anyway luckily my breathing stayed okay, sort of yeah not a very nice few days. Hey Kloker my friend still reading how you are doing, you Take care .X

    1. Hey, CopdGirl! Are you still moving in a good direction with your healing? I can't believe this happened to you! And all because you wanted to do something nice for yourself. 🙁 Was this brand or color different from what you usually buy? I hope the steroids are doing their job and am SO grateful your lungs weren't upset by this terrible reaction. Hugs to you as always! -Melissa, copd.net team

    2. Hi Melissa, nice to hear from you, yeah I am slowly getting better, but burnt my scalp and ears back neck, it was a different dye, black supposed to be gentle on the scalp and no ammonia in it, so no bad strong smells in it. The pain is very uncomfortable though. I am always weary about smells e.t.c but thought I would give it ago, as I have done before. Thankyou so much for your reply Melissa, I hope you are okay.X
