To Swim or Not To Swim...

I have begun a swimming exercise class at our local YMCA. I take a deep water class in the cool pool and I do A-chi in the warm water pool twice a week. My question is - I don't have any problem breathing in either pool but I've met some people who can NOT breathe in the warm pool because of their COPD.....am I doing harm to my lungs in the warm pool, even though I don't have any issues in the warm pool?? Clowning Granny

  1. Hi Grannie, and thanks for your post and your question - it's a good one! You may be aware we cannot provide medical advice or diagnostics over the internet (for your own safety), but your concern certainly warrants a reply.
In the most general of terms, some folks with COPD have no issues when in a pool - warm or cool. And yet others, may have issues with chlorine, warm pool water and/or cool water (chlorinated or salt water pools). This can vary considerably from patient to patient.
You may be the sort of patient, who is not affected by pool water. To be absolutely certain about your own particular medical situation, you may want to discuss this further with your physician.
    What do you think?
