Tiredness

I find myself extra tired recently. I also have osteoarthritis in my back, knees and shoulders and they say you can be tired due to that. I am curious as to whether COPD makes you tired. I wake up a lot due to the osteo pain, but have done that for years and never this tired. Also feeling somewhat depressed. Have to push myself to do things which was also never something I had to deal with. I am 77.

  1. Hi , i'm sorry to hear about how tired you have been lately. Fatigue and mental health challenges are really common amongst those with COPD. Here are a few articles that you might find helpful on them: https://copd.net/living/five-ways-fight-fatigue, https://copd.net/living/fatigue-solution, and https://copd.net/mental-health. If either of these problems persists, you may want to speak to your doctor about them, they are in the best position to help you and your specific needs. Please keep us updated on how you are doing. All the best, Sam S. (COPD.net, Team Member).

    1. ,
COPD can absolutely make you feel tired. The damaged lungs from COPD use up so much energy doing their job of exchanging Oxygen and CO2, that there often times is not enough energy left for anything else. Not to mention the rest of your body getting enough oxygen to function properly. When I have a flare up, I definitely feel a lot more tired than usual. I am 10 years younger than you, and I still feel tired at times. I am doing my best to combat this by exercising daily, using my acapella and voldyne machines daily to keep mucus levels low and to strengthen my lungs, I do controlled breathing daily, and I take my medications on time and strictly according to instructions. I am sure your osteoarthritis has a lot to do with the tiredness also. Seems like all the conditions together are compounding the situation. You should contact your health care provider and discuss these problems with them. It seems that there ought to be something they can do to help your situation out. Hang in there and don't give up! God Bless.
