Symptoms for Mild to Moderate COPD?

The doctors thought I had Myasthenia Gravis since I have all of the symptoms. I don't have MG. I still have all of the symptoms. All of my controllable muscles are affected - from my eyes to my toes - especially my lungs. I feel fine sitting still but immediately upon exerting myself at any level I start gasping for air. My pulmonologist says I have the lungs of a marathon runner - even with mild to moderate COPD. Am I crazy? Could all of my symptoms be coming from COPD? Any insight offered would be appreciated.

  1. Hi. Welcome to our COPD community! It's great to see you sharing your personal experience and for your question -- it is a good one. Your doctor's comment about having the "lungs of a marathon runner" sounds like a positive takeaway from your visit. However, it's completely understandable to feel frustrated by the lack of clarification from your doctor.

While COPD primarily affects the lungs, it's important to note that it can also have systemic effects like muscle weakness and fatigue due to factors such as chronic inflammation decrease in physical activity. While these symptoms are common with COPD, widespread muscle weakness, especially affecting controllable muscles from your eyes to your toes, may indicate other underlying issues beyond COPD.

It might be helpful to discuss your concerns further with your doctor and explore additional evaluations to identify any other potential causes for your symptoms. Remember, you're not alone in this journey, and being your own best self-advocate can empower you to seek the answers and support you need.

    1. John:
Thanks for your reply. Much appreciated.
I certainly doubt that my symptoms are coming from my mild to moderate COPD especially since I quit smoking 8 years ago. But I’m trying to check all the boxes for conditions I don’t have. It’s very frustrating.
      Take care.

      1. Thanks

        1. You are welcome. Glad to hear that you found my response helpful. It certainly can be frustrating when you are experiencing health issues, especially when your doctor doesn't seem to understand what is going on. Good luck! And please do keep us posted how it goes and what you learn. Wishing you all the best. John. community moderator.
