shortness of breath / good oxygen level

New to the forum. I was diagnosed in June. Is it normal to have good oxygen reading but still be short of breath? Simple tasks and I can't catch my breath or breath heavy. I am on Albuterol and Advair. I know exercise is good for me, but I don't have the wind to walk. I quit going to the grocery store for myself, because I get so short winded and then start coughing.

  1. Hi , and welcome! I see you are a new member here having just joined today, earlier this afternoon. We are glad to see you already engaging with the community through this, your first post.
As you may be aware, COPD affects each patient differently, so it's difficult for us to say what is 'normal' for you specific level of disease.
However, for many folks with a COPD diagnosis, they, too may have an acceptable oxygen saturation level and still remain short of breath (SOB). This tends to be a typical characteristic of this disease (COPD). I thought you might gain some additional insight from this article, which speaks to this very topic: https://copd.net/clinical/breathlessness-vs-oxygen-saturation.
To find out more detail about what you can expect with COPD, you may want to discuss this with your private medical doctor.
    What do you think?

      1. Beve,
I was diagnosed two years ago with Stage 2 COPD. I work out with light dumbbells 3 times a week and do Qigong 3 days a week. I cough and get short of breath when I exercise. But the more I exercise and get used to the routine, the less I seem to cough and the easier I find it to breathe. I hardly ever really feel like exercising but force myself to do it. Once I am done, I feel better, and it seems to make other chores easier to handle. So, having the knowledge firsthand as to how exercise helps me breathe, makes it easier to do. Other things I do (like house cleaning), makes me short of breath sometimes, so I just take a break and sit down to catch my breath. I go the grocery store weekly with my wife. I do well until the meat and produce sections, where the cold air makes it hard for me to breathe and I start coughing. I just go to a warmer part of the store and wait for my wife to finish those sections, and all is good. Do you use your Albuterol before exercise or going to the grocery store? I was instructed by my pulmonologist to use Albuterol about 15 minutes before exercise or before doing chores that can make it hard for me to breath. It really helps to get through the exercise or store errands. If you just continue to not exercise, it will only make your COPD worse. You have to help yourself to make it bearable. Not to mention it will help your blood circulation and oxygen circulation. I would suggest asking your doctor about attending some pulmonary rehab sessions. It can only help. Take care and God Bless!

        1. Hi beve, I agree with what Dminor9 is saying here exercise does help just do what you can even sitting down exercises, start very very slowly and never push yourself to hard, I have started to exercise again now but nearly gave it up as a bad job. Music helps me in my moving more, they say ONLY those who can dance around for 20mins a day and that can be enough. But that is me, and as Leon states everyone is different in their Copd.So sitting down moving your arms legs to fingers and toes, breathing exercises are good for the lungs. It is hard so I know where you’re coming from here.Always listen to your body though, and in our case lungs.DON,T beat yourself up though if you can’t do much at all, as this disease is a pain in the bum and a flipping nuisance. This is just me in my case, and also different stages of Copd and emphysema makes things even harder to do, Take Care beve and go kind on yourself.X
