Anyone Else Have Overlap Syndrome? (COPD & Sleep Apnea)

I have COPD, sleep apnea and bouts of insomnia.

Just realised that there was a specific name for having both at one time.

Was just wondering if anyone else has been diagnosed as such and how are they coping.

  1. Hi Serenity and thanks for your post - you've posed an excellent question. I am hopeful others in the community who have both COPD and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), will chime in and share their experiences here with both you and the community.
In the meanwhile, I thought you might find it helpful and informative to look over this article on that very topic: https://www.aastweb.org/blog/osa-and-copd-overlap-syndrome-signs-symptoms-and-mortality#:~:text=Two%20common%20sleep%2Fpulmonary%20diseases%20are%20obstructive%20sleep%20apnea,conditions%2C%20according%20to%20the%20American%20Sleep%20Apnea%20Association. I do hope you find it to be helpful in a practical way.
If you haven't as yet, you may want to take a look at our sleep disorders sister site - you may find it a good place to be familiar with, too: https://sleep-disorders.net/
    Wishing you well,

    1. Thank you Leon.
I am familiar with the article pertaining to overlap syndrome.
Will definitely check out your sister site.

      1. It's our pleasure, Serenity! I thought you might be familiar with that article. I think you'll also appreciate our sister site for sleep disorders. (https://sleep-disorders.net/).
Please know you are always welcome here in our online community.
        All the best,

    2. Well, this is just peachy. Apparently, I have this too. I have a brand-new NIV machine that I am struggling mightily to learn how to use, with not much luck so far. It feels wonderful, but I have been so far unable to fall asleep with it. My sleep study showed my C02 levels very high when sleeping, and I feel like I get very little real sleep/rest. I sleep only a couple of hours at a time, and with little benefit. Just read that article, and yup. So, I guess I'll be visiting the sister site too.

      1. I knew I wasn't the only person with overlap syndrome on this site.
        Real rest; what's that? (jokingly)
Ah, to sleep for five, six, seven or even eight hours straight.
Doesn't help having COPD additionally but we are all survivors; whether just having COPD or other ailments combined.
        The key is staying positive.
        I'm still learning the concept.

      2. Good for you, kloker - you can bring all you have to offer to our sister site - I am sure they will all welcome your big time!
        Enjoy the new community!!
