Nebulisers

Does using a nebuliser make the heart race? My partner uses one three times daily and he has AF, so has been advised to take a higher dose (10 mg instead of 7.5mg of Bisoprolol. ( which he says makes him feel dizzy and wobbly)

  1. Hi .partner. I see that you have 2 posts, I will respond here.
Everyone is different and responds to medication differently. It used to seem like my nebs always triggered a fast heart rate. My docs, pulmonary and cardiology, weren’t too concerned. My cardio diagnosis was pulmonary hypertension. My heart rate was never at a rate of concern when I had it checked. Over the years, there has been a change of one nebulizer med, with more focus on my asthma, instead of COPD. There are still times that I feel like my heart is beating out of my chest. I can check my heart rate and it seems okay. Other times it’s fine. My inhaler can sometimes trigger my heart rate too. My GP doctor is careful about other medications that might affect my heart.

That is my story, just to let you know that I do understand somewhat, because of my history with nebulizer meds affecting my heart rate. With your partner, it’s different. Different diagnosis and different health history. If you both are concerned, then go ahead and make an appointment with the doctor or go to emergency.
    We are here for you.

    1. Yes! Out of the 3 medications I use the one that makes the heart race for me is albuterol. Chatted with my doctors and they agree to just keep an eye on it, but figures all is good for I already take a medication for tachycardia (high pulse rate), which is also used for high blood pressure. Just would recommend that you might want to chat with your medical team and see what they think. I wish you the best!

      1. Thankyou both.. Sorry this is a late reply.. Husband was in hospital with breathlessness a month ago and he was put on 4x nebs peer day, salbutamol, and in resuss because his heartrate went up to 150 or so.. Discharged after 3 days. they then put him on a higher dose of bisoprolol because of this ( to lower his heart rate), but that made him dizzy, and he was diagnosed then with postural hypotension as his blood pressure was much much lower when standing or moving.

Then two weeks ago.. He had another night in hospital and they lowered his bisopropolol from 10mg per day to 5mg.. So we are still monitoring that. I realise that this has nothing to do with COPD, just giving extra information.

He is still on the 3 times neb daily, and has still got slight dizziness on moving, which is not helping with having COPD too!

Anyway.. thank you for all your help and advice.

        1. Hi . Thanks for the update. I hope his doctors figure out what is going on soon and settle on a treatment plan that is effective for both heath conditions. Keep us posted if you don't mind. We'll be thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)
