lung capacity questions

Hoping someone can shed some light on a few questions I have. My father, age 81 and a former long-time smoker, is suffering from end-stage COPD, emphysema, and kidney disease. Perhaps some short-term memory loss as well (currently being investigated.) My mom, his primary caregiver, told me over the weekend that they visited my father's pulmonologist last week and my father's lung capacity dropped to 14%, down from a mere 18% only three months ago. My questions:

Is this steep of a drop typical? Is he declining rapidly? I know none of you can predict the future, but what does this mean for his longevity?

  1. Hi kuetoo, and thanks for your post. You may be aware we cannot provide medical advice or diagnostics over the internet (for your own safety), but your concern certainly warrants a reply.
This is really a question that you may want to discuss further with your Dad's physician. Generally speaking, COPD affects each patient differently. The doctor will be the best health care professional to explain your father's overall medical condition to you, what the treatment plan is, and what to expect moving forward.
    What do you think?

    1. Thank you for the response, Leon! Unfortunately I think that's more of my mom's conversation to have with the doc. I don't have access to him/her, and I'm afraid asking my mom to ask these questions might be too much "reality" for her. I was really just hoping others might respond with their own experiences with such a low lung capacity.

      1. , you have definitely come to the right place to connect with others! As Leon said, we can't offer specific medical advice, but I am confident that if anyone in the community has an experience to share that they will! All the best, Sam S. (COPD.net, team member).

      2. Hi again, kuetoo, and thanks for the explanation. I get it! I also understand your desire to know more about what's going on based on other's experiences with a similar illness and situation. As my colleague, has said, I'm hopeful others will chime in here and share their own experiences with you.
Naturally, if there is anything we can assist you with, please let me or any other moderator / team member know.
        Warm regards,
        Leon (site moderator COPD.net)
