How bad will my diagnosis get?

I have been diagnosed with mild emphysema and asthma based on PFT. I am still very active and scared stiff. I work full time in a very physical job.

What will COPD progression look like for me?

I have read so much which contradicts what I was told. Now I have stopped smoking, I will progress no further. Reading has told me this is not true.

Have also been told my lungs will deteriorate like people my age with no lung disease. I am clinically depressed. Waiting for counselling. I see I have no future, gasping for air, disabled and a complete loss of independence being on oxygen and immobile.

  1. Hi Veronica61 and thanks for your post. We appreciate your candor here with the community. I will echo what my colleague, Janet, has written.
It is so important to adjust to this condition as its progression can be slowed down when managed correctly. I thought this article on that very aspect of COPD might provide you with some additional insight: https://copd.net/living/progress-can-be-slowed/. I do hope you find it to be helpful. 1. I can give you a second opinion researching your PFT results. The key numbers are FEV1 and FVC both pre and post bronchodilator and DLCO.
