How long does it take for COPD to progress?

My Pulmonologist diagnosed me with COPD and emphysema in June 2017. He said it was mild stage one. My question is how long does it take to progress to stage two? Is it different for everyone? Also if you follow your doctor’s direction and the plan he gave to you, is it possible you won’t go to stage two? I know that’s probably wishful thinking!!

  1. Hi Jamca7064 - I'm sorry about the diagnosis, but catching it in the mild stage is great! I know you love a more definite answer, but it progresses in every person differently.

However, because it was caught early with you, there is so much you can do to slow the progress. For instance, make sure you eat a healthy diet, maintain a good weight, get moderate exercise, try to have a good sleep routine, and don't smoke. That may seem like a basic list of things we should all do to maintain our health, but it's even more important after you've been diagnosised with COPD.

If you keep your lungs and body in the best shape possible, it's much harder for the COPD to progress.

Here's an article that I believe you'll find very helpful. https://copd.net/living/tips-for-staying-healthy-early-stage

    1. Thank you so much Lyn. I am following most of your suggestions . I have to start eating a more healthy diet . Of course I don’t eat a lot of bad things but I do sometimes.
I started pulmonary rehab yesterday as I am going to work hard to keep this disease at bay. I am very thankful for this site! Thanks again , Barb

  2. Hi Jamca7064 and thanks for your question. All the best, Leon (site moderator)
