If I don't have symptoms, do I need to take my medications?

As a non smoker and a newly diagnosed COPD patient, I am having trouble taking the medications prescribed by my doctor. I am now trying my third inhaler because the past two made me hoarse.

Is it necessary to take these meds if I'm symptom-free?

I haven’t had any symptoms for months... no shortness of breath or wheezing or excess mucus (which is what sent me to the doctor). I have two questions: if I am symptom free is it necessary to inhale these strong chemicals everyday and is there something more natural that I might try since my system is so sensitive to what I have tried so far?

The reactions are worse than my symptoms!
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I teach 5 classes per day, and the reactions to the medications are worse than the symptoms right now. Thanks in advance. Martha

  1. Hi Martha, thank you for reaching out! I am glad to hear you are feeling so well and not actively having symptoms at this time! We cannot offer medical advice or treatment recommendations over the internet (for your safety!) but I would encourage you to discuss these questions with your doctor. It may be that if you are feeling well, s/he might recommend you use your inhaler(s) on an as-needed basis. But this is a decision that should be made between the two of you! We do have an introductory article about natural remedies that might be of interest to you.

I would also encourage you to discuss any you may be considering with your doctor before beginning, just to be sure nothing in contraindicated for you. Please keep us posted on what you learn and how you are managing. Wishing you a gentle day. ~Allyson (COPD.net team)

    1. Thanks, Allyson. I will definitely checkout the link you provided. I will also talk to my doctor later this month about the possibility of not using the medications everyday, but as needed. I have always had trouble taking medications. In fact, I am even allergic to Benadryl. I have a sister like me, who is in the medical profession. She just says that “the world is wired for ‘AC’ current, but we are wired for ‘DC.’ “ Once again, thanks for the info, and I will let you know how things go.

      1. I should and would take the meds, but have Pulmonologist look for ones with less side affects
