Constantly runny nose

My nose runs constantly, and especially when using oxygen. I have to blow my nose or use a tissue 40-50 times/day. My pulmonologist cannot explain 'why' . Has anyone had this experience?

  1. Hi again, Joe B. We have had others in our community experience this very same issue when using supplemental oxygen at home. You may want to inquire of your equipment supplier (recognizing that you've already told us they leave much to be desired) about a simple humidifier to attach to the oxygen device. Sometimes the oxygen can dry our the nasal mucosa and cause a runny nose. The humidifier generally takes care of this.

    1. I have a humidifier on my concentrator. My nose runs constantly. I always say my nose gets more exercise then any other part of me, it's always running. This has happened for so long I'm used to it, but it is annoying.

  2. I mentioned this to my Pulmonologist and he recommended
Ipratropium Bromide Nasal Solution to be sprayed twice a day
2 sprays, It does help sometimes when I remember to use it.
I also have the humidifier attached to my consentrator since
I have had 3 nose bleeds.

    1. My nose bleeds are also a symptom of a deviated septum. (My PCP thought I had MRSA??)

    2. The Nasal Solution you are using is a steroid. I use it also for the runny nose, however, it causes problems with swallowing due to swelling. Have you found this also?

  3. I have the same issue, but my nose, left side mostly, also will bleed. I have had large clots fall from my nasal cavity into my throat. Almost choked on one the other day. If my nose is not running it is extremely dry. I have had the humidifier on my concentrator, but it builds up so much moisture, I find myself almost drowning in it while sleeping. The entire tubing will fill with water. I have AC & live in very humid S. Texas.

    1. Hi. Chronic nosebleeds are pretty common but also really frustrating to deal with. I'm concerned about the large clots that are going down your throat -- this could be a sign of a more severe nasal injury. I would reach out to your doctor, if you haven't already -- there are a number of treatments available for nosebleed, and they may be able to address the dryness, too. You also won't have to worry about choking.

As for the issues with the humidifier, I'm going to tag our respiratory therapist who might have some suggestions.

I hope you can find some ways to feel more comfortable. We're here to support you. -Melissa, team member

  4. I've long been bothered by stuffy nose and flirting with Afrin addiction. More recently (past year?), it's not been as bad, but instead I'm getting excessively heavy runny nose. I mean soaking paper towels, streaming onto my dinner plate, etc. It remits after a while, and often seems triggered by positional change such as getting up from sitting. Antihistamine Azelastine nose spray didn't seem to make much difference either. I'm 75 yo male stage 4.

    1. Tom, if you have an ENT doctor, have him check your nose for a possible deviated septum. My runny nose was as bad as yours, and yes, I have occasional nose bleeds all from my deviated septum.
