Runny Nose and Sneezing

I am new to COPD.Net and am so pleased I found this site. I am sure it will be helpful to me dealing with my COPD.
I have a question. Do others who have COPD have issues with recurring runny nose and sneezing? In searching the net I ran across one article that suggested individuals with COPD can have issues with ongoing runny nose and sneezing,

  1. CopdGirl,
    Thank you for your response.
To clarify, I don't have a runny nose and sneezing everyday. It comes and goes and is not seasonal in nature like allergies. It occurs year round. Started about 4 or 5 years ago when I think my COPD started to be a significant issue which makes me think it is COPD related. MY family doctor has not confirmed the association of the runny nose and sneezing with COPD.

    1. I have been curious about this condition for some time. I'm on oxygen almost 24/7, but occasionally I can do without, but as soon as my body needs more oxygen my nose starts running and I have to blow it 2 or3 times before it quits, and then I sometimes have a sneezing fit. It's definitely COPD related because I do not have allergies. My doctor has no idea why this occurs.

    2. I have the stuffy and runny nose...not allergy related. Pulmo Dr. has me on generic Flonase for stuffy nose and a nose spray with Ipatropium for stopping runny nose. They work!! She says most likely COPD related. So, please check with your Dr. about those.

  2. Welcome to the group! I don't have this issue 24/7, but I do wake every day with head congestion, which only clears after I am upright. So, I cannot breathe through my nose when sleeping. Which seriously limits my sleep. Like, I cannot sleep generally for more than maybe two hours at a time. Of course, my bladder also contributes to that. However, it is allergy season here in Austin, and I have the runny nose. sneezing, and coughing, likely from cedar. But it is fairly frequent, so there are other things in the air that are irritants, which I am now more susceptible that I once was. I am on 02 24/7 and I have a large air purifier right next to my concentrator. It does help some. But it can be quite frustrating, especially as I sleep with an NIV machine (Non-Invasive Ventilator - an advanced Bi-Pap Device). So, the condition limits my use of that, too, and I cannot get full benefit of it. All of it together means obstacles that prevent me from ever getting enough sleep. Plus, I should buy stock in Puffs with lotion. Ha! There's a lot of good information here, so look around. I've learned an immense amount from the good folks here!

    1. To remedy the stuffy nose in the morning and while sleeping, my Doc ordered me to use a cool mist humidifier. I would not sleep without it!

This is the site I found that speaks to the sneezing and runny nose associated with COPD.
The results of the study should be read with some caution because the sample size of the research was quite small.

    1. Hi Dutchie, and welcome. I see you are a new member, having joined yesterday during the day. We're glad to have you here!
As to your concern about runny noses / sneezing with COPD, several of our members have spoken to this issue. Naturally, for some folks with COPD. they also may have other medical issues and it would appear, a fair number have allergies, rhinitis and the plain old runny nose, too. As you are aware, sneezing can accompany any of these at any time.
I thought you might gain some additional insight from any of these articles (published right here on COPD.net), which speak to your expressed concerns: https://copd.net/search?s=runny%20nose%20sinusitis%20sneezing. I do hope you find them to be helpful in a practical way.
