Does anyone else experience exhaustion during the afternoon?

I am trying to find out if anyone else experiences this…in the afternoons after a busy day, there are times when I feel completely exhausted and my body is worn completely down. To the point that I can hardly move. Anyone else experience this? I have Stage 3 Emphysema.

    Hi Deedie (Goldenboys3)
You have received quite a few responses.
I get that, and call it my crash and burn time. I know if I don’t lay down at that time, I will go down.
I think the exhaustion can be both physical and emotional. Physical because alot of things that we do, takes a toll. Often we have had or have to learn how to do things differently, in a way that our bodies will allow us do to them, and we get tired easier. Emotional, because we may have to rethink the way we do things, medications can affect our thinking and if our oxygen is decreased, that can altar our thinking as well.
If you do struggle with this, do check with your doctor. If you can’t get your doc on the phone, talk with the nurse who will be able to relay questions and answers.
I always recommend that people keep a journal of questions, health issues, other life issues and medications that may have been added or removed, this should include medications that were added by your doctor as well. Some of these may affect the other. Then too, you have them when you go to the doctor.
I’m glad that you found us, and that you found the article helpful. Know that we are here for you.
    I hope you have a breathe-easy day!

I feel this a few hours before bed. It’s a unique pain with interesting branches. I haven’t found how to stop it entirely, but I ask whomever can, to massage my back. I know it sounds silly, but it alleviates my lungs hitting my ribs. Pain drains my energy.

Hi Goldenboys3, This is a great question and our community is great about responding and sharing their own experiences. Fatigue is such a real part of COPD that outsiders don’t really think about or even understand. I see Lynn already sent you a great article on this subject and I also want to share some articles as well:

I hope this is helpful to you. Please check back and let us know how you are doing.
    Best, Noel (COPD.net Team)

    Hi Goldenboys3,

I’m sure someone else in the community will also chime in with a more personal experience, but I can tell you that you’re definitely not alone in this. Many people with COPD describe the overwhelming feeling of tiredness they feel at different points during the day. I think you aptly characterized it as “exhaustion”.

In case you didn’t see it, here’s the link to an article about just that subject. https://copd.net/living/tired-vs-copd-tired/

Thanks Lyn. I read the article and it was helpful. It is nice to have a place to come and get answers. This is one of the best support groups. I have a wonderful Pulmonary doctor but really don’t see her often enough for questions that come up. Deedie

Hi Goldenboys3 and thanks for your post. As Lyn has said, it may bring you some comfort to know that you are definitely NOT alone when you are feeling noticeably tired going through your day. Others in our community have expressed similar sentiment when it comes to their energy levels.
Besides the excellent reference Lyn has provided, I thought you might also find it helpful to look over this material on COPD and fatigue: https://copd.net/symptoms/tiredness/.
    All the best,

Thanks Leon, you, Lyn and Noel have made me feel comfortable in this site. I have had emphysema since 2014 but don’t talk to friends about it as they don’t really understand. As the saying goes, you need to walk in my shoes. Appreciate this site very much. Deedie
