What now

I have end stage copd. It was diagnosed 3 years ago. I have breast cancer and I am not a good candidate for surgery. My pulmonary doctor is currently consulting with the oncology surgeon about anesthesia. Do any members of this group know about anyone using an alternative to being totally anesthetized for this type of surgery? I would appreciate any input.

  1. Hi bj, and thanks for your post and comment. My heart goes out to you for all you are dealing with medically now.
It is good to hear that your pulmonary physician is collaborating with the oncology surgeon to evaluate the various opportunities that may be available for the surgical procedure. With the proper team working on this together (and with you), you can feel confident they will determine the best approach to the anesthesia and surgery while still managing the pulmonary disease (COPD).
Please do check back and let us know how this progresses for you. We are all pulling for you, bj!
    Warmly,

    1. Thanks for letting me know about the forum.

    2. I'm not end stage, but stage three I believe. Endocrinolgist recommended I have an adrenal gland removed, (to maybe help with high blood pressure, higher sugars, weight, etc.) went to surgeon and he didn't seem to want to do it (at UVA) unless knew I could make it through surgery. (I did have other surgery there last year but that was a cancer that was removed.) He thinks this isn't a "life saving" procedure I guess. So have appt with pulmonologist there to see what they say next week. Wondering if I'll be able to have any other surgeries because of my copd.

      1. The endocrinologist did communicate with surgeon. The first surgeon she recommended was just going to do it, but I wasn't fond of him, so went for second opinion. This was the 2nd opinion doctor that was hesitant. I am communicating with both.

      2. Hi again, njb, and thanks for your response and further explanation. It's good to hear you are actively pursuing the best course of treatment for yourself by speaking with the medical team involved.
Now, we'll look forward to hearing the results of your appointment coming up this week.
We are all pulling for you!
        Warmly,
