Swollen feet and ankles.

Hi everybody, is anyone suffering with swollen ankles and feet, and is it connected to Copd , emphysema. My feet has caused me bother over time with Raynauds , Scleroderma but left foot is getting bigger than normal lately. It is with me being on my feet a while, my mother in law said it is water retention as she poked her finger on it, hurt but the finger mark did stay there for a bit. My toes cramp up a lot also more than ever.Just wanted to know if anyone knows that it is Copd starting to pop up more and maybe part of another extra complication of emphysema that just gets worse over time.X

  1. Hi - how good to hear from you again!
As it turns out, as you suggested, there are other diseases/conditions that may be associated with COPD. These are often referred to as comorbidities. You have shared that you also have other diagnoses (Raynaud's disease and Scleroderma (which can be related)), and we appreciate your candor with the community. There still are other medical conditions that may cause a swelling of the extremities, as your mother-in-law suggested.
If these symptoms continue and the swelling persists or worsens even, you may want to reach out for your physician. The doctor will be able to differentiate what specifically is causing this in your individual case. Once the proper diagnosis is reached, suitable treatment can be provided for you, if necessary.
Please do check back, CopdGirl, and let us know how this all turns out for you.
    Good luck!

    2. Oh CopdGirl - you DO have a unique sense of humor!! Are you thinking of taking this up with your physician? It is important to know what may be causing this so that you can be made to feel better.
      Good luck!

  2. CopdGirl,
I am sorry to hear of your swelling problem. As Leon said above, there are many conditions that can cause swelling and water retention. If it continues, please contact your medical team! Not that it makes any difference, but my pulmonologist always feels my lower legs and ankles when I see him. Since I do not have any other medical problems, I always just thought that leg or ankle selling was related to my COPD if it occurred. Now I wonder. I will have to ask him the next time I see him. Please let the forum know how it all turns out. Take care and God Bless you CopdGirl!

    1. Thankyou so much for your reply Dminor9 it is always appreciated.X

Always a good idea to check in with the doc, though, especially if your feet are now trotters. Sending hugs! -Melissa, copd.net team
