Smoking marijuana?

Is smoking marijuana just as bad as smoking cigarettes when you have COPD and emphysema?

  1. Hi , and thanks for your post and question - it's a good one! I am sure there are many opinions out there about this topic. I am also hopeful others, from the community, will weigh in and share their thoughts.
In the meanwhile, I thought you might gain some additional insight for your concern (cigarettes versus marijuana and the effects on COPD). from this article (by the COPD Foundation), which focuses on this very issue: https://journal.copdfoundation.org/jcopdf/id/1182/Marijuana-Lung. I do hope this information begins to answer some of your concerns.
    Wishing you well,

    1. I am struggling with the same thing. I have smoked weed since age 14, all day long. My guess is that the weed gave me the COPD since I was never really a cigarette smoker early in my life. I only have Asthma all my life and COPD. From what I recently read on Mayo clinic page my FEV1 gives me stage 4 COPD... Never heard of stages until I joined this page.
I wish I had an answer to your question myself. But I am sure the weed cannot make the situation better.
While in the hospital, the Marijuana smoking was a big topic of discussion with Dr's and everyone else. According to all of them I really needed to quit... Their answer was to eat THC gummys. A friend sent me a large container filled with fruity 10mg gummys but I am not so sure about it, so I am not eating them. I tried 1/2 of one a few times but really didn't feel much. Eating weed always made you too high stupid so I am cautious.
Let's face it, smoke of any kind can't be good for people with our conditions. I am not sure what to do, but I don't want to get worse either

      1. For what it's worth, and you might know this already so ignore me if you do, gummies and other non-smoke items come in a wide variety of dosages. Some will suggest having just a quarter of a gummy/cookie/etc to get it just right. But, as Leon said, the choice is personal. Something to ponder. Thanks for always being so candid here, Tim -- these are good and important topics that I'm sure many are benefitting from, even if they're just reading. -Melissa, copd.net team

      2. Hi... ๐Ÿ˜Š
I had a bad experience once eating brownies and I am just not willing to take the chance of anything like that happening again.... I have a bunch of gummies sent to me by someone I trust from Boulder who is involved in all of the legal stuff making them. I know it might be OK to try more than I did but you don't forget that when you smoke you control how high you get, but eating THC is another story.
