My partner has just been diagnosed with COPD and emphysema. Can we claim PIP? He's a self-employed window cleaner.

Hi Donna123, thank you for reaching out! In doing a quick google search, I believe you may be referring to the Personal Independence Payment in the UK. Being based in the US, I am not personally familiar with this program. I do know that in the US, people who have not reached retirement age have applied and been granted disability for COPD. I believe this is the equivalent program to PIP, however, each country has their own laws and rules about what qualifies for this sort of program. I hope if others in the community who are based in the UK do have more experience with this, they will share with you! There are a few suggestions of organizations to consult for advice under the "Help with PIP" section on this site that might also be valuable: https://www.gov.uk/pip You might also consider reaching out to a lawyer for help navigating the process. I hope this gives you a few ideas to consult for additional information! Wishing you a gentle day. ~Allyson (COPD.net team)

Hi Donna123, I'm from the UK. Hopefully I can help you, anyone is eligible to apply for PIP. It is not a means tested Benefit. Having COPD (Emphysema) doesn't automatically qualify for this benefit, but don't let that stop your husband applying for it. It's a lot of form filling and to help you apply get supporting letters from your GP and Pulmonary Consultant (photo copy them) and send in the photo copies with the form. When you phone for the form they will also do a phone assessment whilst preparing the form to send it out. Hope this helps, and all the best. Debz (Site Moderator)

Thank you so much Debz. I'll make sure he photo copys everything we get. We've not sure if we want to apply yet, it's just a case of....what happens if he has a bad flare up and isnt breathing that well, and cant work that day/days/a week. what do we do for money..Bill's....food...anything the kids need etc....this is all new to us and scary to be honest. But thank you for your reply
