Palliative care at home

I always thought that Palliative Care was given through Hospice. Can your doctor order it in your home, and what does contain? Thanks

  1. Hi! Great question. Palliative care and hospice do often come together, but they are not the same. Palliative care is about managing your symptoms and giving you better quality of life, and you can do that at any time! Pain medicine, physical therapy, counseling and other therapies can be part of palliative care.

Hospice is specifically about preparing for the end of life. You have stopped trying to cure the illness, but you would likely still pursue aspects of palliative care, like pain management and counseling.

Here is an article that explains them both in detail:

I bet you are already receiving some of those elements of palliative care and didn't know that was what it was. 😀 If you're looking for more specific help, your GP or pulmonologist can manage that for you.

Does that make sense? It really is a fine line between the two, but the biggest takeaway is that palliative care does not mean you're dying. It's just a different focus.

    Hope that helps!

    1. Hi, Melissa, I'm not yet in Hospice or Palliative Care, but hear others talk about it a lot. I want to know what's out there while I can still get my ducks in a row. Glad to know that Palliative Care can be something to get through the rougher days, but is not necessarily the 'end'. Thanks for your response.
P.S. Trying to put a name to my profile instead of 119769, but don't seem to be having any luck. Will keep trying.

      1. Hi . One huge benefit of pallative care is that a LNP or someone equally trained, will often come to your home if you are unable to travel to appointments and you don't need a specialist's care. My mother-in-law had a spinal deformity that worsened with age and made traveling in a vehicle super uncomfortable. It was such a comfort for her and for us, knowing she could get basic clinical exams, blood draws, cultures and vaccines done at home. I highly recommend it if you qualify.

    2. Well, look at this, Lori.Foster, instead of 119769, I am now: good days 43. Thanks!

      1. Yay! I love it when people let their personalities show in their usernames. So glad you made it work. -Melissa, team member
