Can oxygen concentrators work in lieu of ventilators?

Can these COPD oxygen concentrators work temporarily before ventilators become available in the current crisis?

  1. Hi bob.coger.sr, and thanks for your question.

Actually, ventilators and oxygen concentrators are two distinctly different pieces of equipment.

Ventilators are considered to be 'life support' machines, and actually provide mechanical ventilatory support for patients who can no longer breathe on their own.

Oxygen concentrators, on the other hand, can provide a supplemental oxygen source for patients who require oxygen therapy. They are generally used with simple oxygen devices like nasal cannulas or oxygen masks. Generally speaking, they can take the place of oxygen cylinders.

I hope this brief reply provided the information you were looking for.

    All the best,

    1. What about NON INVASIVE VENTILATORS?

Are Continuous Positive Airway Pressure BiLevel Positive Airway Pressure / Variable Positive Airway Pressure, a TYPE of NIV?

What is the TRUE DIFFERENCE between:

      Philips®️ - Respironics®️ BiPAP
      ResMed®️ VPAP®️?

      1. Hi HITE1955 - good question, and thanks for posting it here!

As it stands now, non-invasive ventilation (BiPAP and CPAP), is a type of ventilation that does not require intubation. The term VPAP is generally thought of to be the same as BiPAP.

They are all considered to be non-invasive ventilation (NIV).

I hope this brief reply answers your concerns.

        Wishing you well,
