New to COPD

Hi I used to have uncontrollable asthma since having covid in 2021. I have now been told I have COPD overlap. What I was wondering does anyone ever pass out I'm asking because I'm a senior carer in a care home and the other week they where paint one of the rooms the fumes got on my chest by the end of my 12 hr shift I passed out for. Few seconds.
I get out of breath daily.im currently waiting for a spirometry test.

  1. Hi Sharon, and thanks for your post and question - it's a good one! You are certainly in the right place
as we are all about all things COPD and COPD related, even asthma-COPD overlap.
We appreciate you sharing (so candidly), your recent experience 'passing out' after being exposed to the fumes of wet paint
in the facility where you are a senior carer. There are any number of medical conditions which can cause someone to 'pass out'
and/or lose consciousness. This isn't an episode to be taken lightly. My suggestion would be for you to, at the very least, advise your
private medical doctor (PMD), of this event from the other week. The doctor will be able to provide you with a proper assessment, possible
diagnosis and treatment if necessary. What do you think?

    1. Hi. Sorry that this happened to you. As Leon said, it's a good idea to let your doctor know that this happened to see if any followup is necessary. That said, breathing in chemical fumes for a long time can be a problem for all kinds of people, even those without respiratory issues. When is your spirometry scheduled? We are here to support you while you wait and answer any questions you might have. 😀 If you're interested, we also have a sister site for people with asthma. You can find it at asthma.net. Keep us posted, okay? Take care. -Melissa, copd.net team

      1. Leon Lebowitz, BA, RRT morning so I went to see my doctor about passing out he said this would be my oxygen levels being a little low as all bloods came back normal

        1. My place of work will need to put me on a different unit when painting on the unit I work

        2. Hi again, Sharon, and thanks for your response and answer, too. That sounds like a very practical solution from your place of employment.
I would hope that would resolve this aspect of what happened last time.
          Good luck!
