From a COPD perspective, Mucinex is used very frequently around here. It thins mucus, so it might make your nose run a bit more, but can help with getting up phlegm.
It comes in different forms so be careful about checking the labels. I do know that you can get tablets of *just* guaifenesin, which is "safe" (free of stimulants). I have to avoid many ingredients as well because of other medications, so when I get sick, I take guaifenesin and Tylenol.
You can also ask the pharmacist to help you pick out medications. That's a normal part of their job.
