Mucus Production During Flare-Ups

Hi, I've been having a problem with mucus production and moving mucus through my airways. It feels like there's something I can't cough up, but othertimes I feel clear. Is this my symptoms messing with me? Steam treatments made me feel like I was drowning, am I doing it wrong? Off-brand mucinex doesn't seem to do anything and the Internet says it's kind of a placebo, thoughts?

  1. I feel the same way you do when I get up in the morning

    1. Hi CM5b6b12 and welcome! I see you are a new member here having joined just over an hour ago. We are glad to see you already engaging here with the community by posting your first comment!
When it comes to coughing and mucus production (as they relate to COPD), everyone is different. I am aware of patients who feel that both the brand name Mucinex as well as the generics of Mucinex work quite well for themselves. Still others, don't seem to enjoy the same success. This clearly, can vary from patient to patient.
Have you had an opportunity to discuss this with your doctor? If the two of you collaborate, you may be able to come up with a solution that is more effective for your particular level of disease.
      What do you think?

      1. Hi. It's so frustrating when you have mucus stuck in your chest! Are you feeling any better now? For future reference, you may want to talk to your doctor about getting a flutter device and/or a pulmonary vest. The flutter device looks a bit like a kazoo -- you blow into it and it causes your chest to vibrate, helping to move the mucus out. A pulmonary vest is wearable and vibrates. Here's an example of a flutter device:

Of course, you should always talk to your doctor before making any changes to your healthcare routine. I hope you can find something that helps! -Melissa, copd.net team

        1. I can't get the flutter valve to do much, I've tried two different models including a nice one they gave me in the ER, it connects to my neb. But nobody seems to know how to set it up properly.
I imagine insurance will never pay for the vest, I was contacted by a salesperson and that tells me its out of my reach.

        2. I bought one, not cheep. Did not work for me.

      2. Try Benylin Mucus & Phlegm it does help me.
