Loosening congestion?

I am in end stage COPD. Of course, I have inhalers and use them as prescribed. I also take Musinix 2 x's a day to loosen congestion. Does anyone have any other suggestions besides steroids? Thanks in advance, Julie Kay

  1. ,
I can only suggest what I use for congestion. If it is sinus congestion, I use a small vaporizer, sometimes a Neti Pot rinse, and most days an allergy pill. For mucus in your lungs, I use an acapella and spirometer machines 5 times a day, like you I take Mucinex, and occasionally I will take NAC. NAC is a mucolytic (meaning it breaks up mucus). It is available OTC or by prescription. Before taking any, check with your doctor first. Stay hydrated to keep mucus from getting too thick and sticky. The only other suggestion I have is to check with your doctor for ways to help with congestion. Take care and God Bless.

    1. Thank-you so much. Now I have three new things to investigate! Julie Kay

  2. Hi julie, and thank you for posting your comment and concerns. I see our community members, and @CopdGirl, have already responded to your inquiries and provided you with the benefits of their own personal experiences, for which we are grateful. There is nothing like shared anecdotal experiences. They can go a long way towards assisting one another.
I also have something to contribute. For many patients, I have found that positive expiratory pressure (PEP) therapy can be very successful in helping to move mucus. In the hospital where I work, we recommend it for a good number of patients who do very well using it. This would be a good respiratory adjunct for you to mention to your physician to make certain the doctor feels it is suitable therapy in your particular case. Should you want to read more about it, here is an article which I believe will provide you with additional insight: https://copd.net/clinical/flutter-valves-acapellas. I do hope you find this information is helpful for you in a practical way.
