Long Term

My COPD has just been updated to stage 3. So Many Questions and No Answers.??

  1. Good afternoon Thank you for your comment here. Sorry that your diagnosis has been upped to stage 3. It's understandable that you have many questions and are seeking answers. COPD can be a challenging condition to manage, especially as it progresses. What specific questions do you have? 1. I have very severe emphysema and was told just last week that my lung function is only 27% I’m absolute gutted a frightened to death
I have been refused oxygen because I had a relapse with my smoking I have up for 9 months and slipped when my dog died in feb
I now have to wait 3 months until they will even concider me for oxygen
My level can drop to 85/87
During the night if I need the toilet I have to have a portaloo at the side of me because I’m that sob when I move
I live in the uk I’m a co2 retainer and really struggling with sob but there doing nothing even though my medication is very effective anymore
So I to have been denied oxygen

    2. First, let me say that I’m so sorry about the loss of your dog! Our pets are such a big part of our lives and losing one can be very hard on us emotionally.
I’m also sorry and certainly somewhat shocked that you are being denied oxygen therapy because you smoked. In the US we don’t hear of that happening. I find it very concerning.
Stay strong and hopefully all of this will get resolved soon! Please keep us updated. Sincerely, Becky (moderator)

  2. Hi again. Thank you for the update. And I would also like to second (and third) the comments of and above. Of course I am not aware of how you would qualify for oxygen outside of the United States. But, anywhere in the U.S. you would qualify for oxygen simplify by having your doctor order an oxygen qualification test, which is described in this post (https://copd.net/living/qualifying-home-oxygen). That said, I would say it's awesome that you have reduced your cigarette intake from 4+ per day down to 1 once in a "blue moon." I think that is great progress. if you don't mind sharing, who told you you can't get oxygen? John. Community Moderator.
