What has your experience been like after intubation?

First of all pardon my English, I'm Brazilian. My Mother has had COPD for 10 years. Last week she had an exacerbation due to the flu. Long story short, now she's intubated and sedated. The infection is under control but the doctor told us the main problem is this phase: weaning. I would like to know if anyone has had any successful experience after intubation?

  1. Hi msdcastro and thanks for your question. I'm sorry to hear you are going through this now with your mother. As a clinician for many years, I can tell you that we have a lot of experience with intubation, ventilator management, and weaning. I thought this article might provide you with some additional insight for your concerns: https://copd.net/living/intubation-ventilators/. I do hope you find it to be helpful. Although lengthy, most of what you are looking for is covered by the article. The physician(s) caring for your Mom, are the best health care professionals to keep you informed at to her progress and what to expect moving forward. This isn't easy, I know, but hang in there and give her all the encouragement and support you can while she is intubated.
By the way, no need to apologize for your English, you post was very easy to understand and well written, too.
Wishing you all the best - please do keep us posted as to Mom's progress.
    Warmly,

    1. Hi msdcastro - It looks like Leon gave you an excellent answer to your question. I'm sorry to hear what you're going through with your mom, but I'm sure everything will work out well. The healthcare team that manages her case in the hospital will do their best to make sure she weans off the ventilator as soon as possible. It can be hard to be patient, but rest assured they have her best interest in mind.
As Leon said, please let us know how it all goes.
      Warm Regards,
