I get frustrated with my GP when I tell him I need to see my pulmonologist after a year but he feels there is no need. He admittingly admits he knows little about COPD. In our province you cannot call your specialist. It has to go through your GP.
Hi. That sounds incredibly frustrating, especially when you feel the need to see a specialist. It's tough when the system makes it harder to advocate for your own health. Maybe you could ask your GP to refer you just for peace of mind, given that COPD is complex and requires regular monitoring. I hope you're able to get the care you need soon! Hi Joe. When you do finally get in to your specialist, maybe you can talk about the issue with your GP, and have him call/write a letter requesting that you be sent to see him every year or whatever timeline is appropriate. Doctors can be more apt to listen to doctors. Maybe you can even get a message to the pulmonologist's office on the phone if you're still having trouble. Sorry this is happening. Hang in there! -Melissa, team member

Hi . Which Province do you reside in? What stage of COPD have you been diagnosed with?? I live in B.C. and was recently diagnosed with COPD. Emphysema, stage 3. I'd been having breathing issues at work and it took over 4 months to get a CT scan. My GP was pro-active and put me on medication (Incruse Ellipta and Salubutamol) and a respirologist was on standby, pending my CT results. My respirologist has been great and he told me to contact him anytime through his office reception and he gets back to me. It's a humbling disease and it's definitely changed my outlook on life. I've got other medical issues that they're also monitoring so it's very stressful and I'm very grateful to have someone on my side.
