I have 12 years knowingly have COPD Emphysema

What I don't understand is the best why to keep breathing. Is exercise the best practice! Is it walking, light upper body work! Is that the best! What if it seems too difficult! Should I push myself??

  1. Hi CM1b7d21, and welcome! I see you are a new member here having joined about 2 hours ago. We are glad to see you are already engaging with the community through this, your first post!
Although you may be new to the community, I see you are not new to the disease, having some 12 years experience managing the COPD/emphysema. Are you being followed by a physician?
There are several approaches to managing COPD depending on your particular level of disease.
In almost all cases though, as you've mentioned, what generally works well are breathing strategies, staying active (exercise, as appropriate), proper nutrition, rest, and one's own particular medication regimen.
We actually have quite a bit of material published, right here on COPD.net, which focuses on each of these topics (and more!). Should you be interested in any of these articles, please let me or any other moderator / team member know and we will guide you accordingly.
    Wishing you well,
    Leon (site moderator COPD.net)

    1. hi there, welcome! You're asking an excellent question. I am not an expert, but any movement is generally a good idea. Some people walk, others do a little weight lifting right from their chair. It's all good. I wonder if it might be useful for you to talk to your doctor about pulmonary rehab. The professionals there would be able to teach you the best ways to maximize your lung capacity and exercise safely. Hope to see you around more. Take care! -Melissa, copd.net team
