I cannot lie on my back, I feel like I am drowning and it’s hard for any test laying on back . Is this cause by my COPD

I cannot lay on my back at all, it’s feels like I am drowning . I asked my doctors and they are all puzzled. I can’t take any MRI . Is it my COPD ?

  1. That must be scary, . Have you ever been tested for sleep apnea or tried using a CPAP machine? It's possible to have sleep apnea and COPD. Here is an article about the symptoms: https://sleepapnea.sleep-disorders.net/basics. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. yes I do , I have the mask and I also have a oxygen machine I only use at night

    2. it’s very scary, I wish I could find out the reason why

  2. I get this too!

    1. Hi . Have you figured out anything that helps? - Lori (Team Member)

  3. I am the opposite. I sleep entirely on my back. I do use a wedge to keep my upper body inclined. This helps any sinus drainage at night. I sleep very well this way. Hope you solve your sleeping problem. Take care and God Bless!

    1. thank you I hope I find an answer.

  4. I have pretty bad COPD and suddenly I couldn't lay flat or lay back at all and what worked for me is boiling water and breathing in that steam made me cough up a lot of stuff and that worked for some time and when I get congested again I do the same thing. That coughing is hard at first so inhaler helps that to.

    1. Great idea about inhaling steam to help bring up secretions from your lungs. Thank you for sharing what works for you. I am sure others in the community will find this helpful. Wishing you all the best. John. community moderator.
