How do you know when the Ventolin inhaler is empty

My husband has been using the Ventolin inhaler. It says there are 200 DOS. Not sure if there are puffs. How do you know if the puffer is empty

  1. Hi. Great question. Does your inhaler have a dose counter? If so, this can tell you how many puffs are left. However, some generic inhalers do not have a dose counter on them. In this case, there is not way to determine exactly how many puffs are left. However, by shaking it, you can tell if there is medicine left inside. If you are not sure, it may be a good idea to get a new inhaler. That way, when the one he is using doesn't work anymore, you have the other one as a backup. What do you think? 1. Thank you for the advice. I have read about putting the canister in a glass of water to see if it sinks or floats or weighing the canister.

    2. Yes. I thought about putting that in my advice. But I am told that this method no longer works due to the newer inhaler cases and contents. I'm not sure if this is true or not. Although, the float method is never one that I used. Having been an asthmatic my whole life. I have become adept at shaking the inhaler to see how much is inside of it. Thankfully, most modern inhalers have counters. Does yours? John. community moderator.

  2. You may also want to visit the pharmacy where he got it and see if they can help. It really is a shame that all inhalers don't have a dose count -- I think they should! Let us know what you can find out. -Melissa, team member
