How do I keep my spirits up?

Just in the last year, in addition to my Stage 4
COPD, I have developed a micro bacterial lung infection that has severely affected my energy, breathing and life as I knew it. I am housebound, oxygen 24/7, and can't wash a dish with having to sit down. I don't want to get depressed but this way of living is so, so hard. Not being able to breath is scary. I do the best I can, but it's hard to stay positive when I am only comfortable lying down. Anybody else?

  1. Hi . What a lot to contend with. My heart goes out to you. When were you diagnosed? Does your doctor have you on lots of antibiotics? If so, I hope that, as they kick in, you start to recover some of your energy and that breathing becomes a bit easier. I know it can take a long time for antibiotics to do their thing with this kind infection though. Please know we are here for you whenever you need support or a place to vent. Gentle hugs. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Hello . COPD and other lung diseases aren’t for sissies that’s for sure. Other chronic illnesses as well.
Are you on Prednisone and antibiotics? Is that your first round? It’s hard being home around the clock. I understand that. Do you have allergies too?
It helped me to find a hobby or something else to occupy my mind. I play a find the cat game online or a puzzle. I need to get photos together for 2 Shutterfly books and scan more photos for family. I the pc, which pulls out pain.
When I’m in pain, it affects my breathing. On the bad days, I need to occupy my mind. Coming on to the sites here is a bonus. There are others to talk to, many do understand. I think it’s important to be reminded that we aren’t alone in this journey of life.
On my really bad days when I am down, I get up every 30 - 60 minutes to do a bit of exercises: they can be chair exercises, a walk around the living room, to make a healthy snack, or to call a friend. Don’t limit yourself, ask, “what would I like to do now.”
I hope that you can find a little time to smile as well. Most of all, know that you aren’t alone. Know that you aren’t alone. Sending you a gentle hug from across the miles.

      1. Yes loneliness and depression is very heavy. I have no support system or anyone to helo.
Im getting confused w brain fog more and more.
Currently I have no permanent home. Ive been staying in room and Boards. They're filthy not good for my copd abd the people are mostly drug or psych people. It gets scary
Im having an exacerbation but don't want to call 911 again. I can barely get up. I also have f it sed hip, fused neck thaat is way worse n now and chronic ritatir cuff tears and a hernia.
        What do you suggest

        1. Hi . That is certainly not a good situation for you. Have you tried calling social services in your county? They might have housing for people in your situation or a program that can help you find housing. If you are really suffering, please do call 911. I'd rather see you go to the hospital where it is clean and you will be well cared for than suffering in the situation you are in now. Often, hospitals will call in social services for help when someone is unwell and has no place to stay. I see you posted this yesterday. I hope you have reached out for help by now and that you are safe. Please check in when you are able. I will be thinking about you. Gentle hugs. - Lori (Team Member)
