Why do doctors want you to go to the hospital when you have exacerbations?

  1. Hi Miker54 and thanks for posting your question. Although each doctor evaluates and treats every patient individually, I thought your concern warranted more of an explanation. In the most general of term, exacerbations may be significant enough, to be managed in the hospital rather than at home. This can be dependent on the severity of the flare-up. I thought this article (on COPD and exacerbations), might provide you with some additional insight: https://copd.net/living/preventing-managing-exacerbations/. I do hope you find it to be helpful.
